Blog Tour: Vacant - Evelyn R. Baldwin

Short description
VacantEthan Parker gets up every day, surviving the only way he knows how—alone.

Orphaned as a child and forced into the child welfare system, he knows better than to depend on anyone but himself. He’s learned trust is a word used all too often, but rarely earned.

Ethan believes that his best chance for maintaining a simple and solitary existence is to live by a simple mantra: Don’t get involved. Keep things simple.

Take care of yourself!

When a young woman moves in next door, Ethan is forced to reevaluate his beliefs. He tries to keep his distance, but his new neighbor’s infectious smile and outlook on life leave him struggling with the decision of living the life he knows, or taking a chance on the unexpected.

As Ethan develops a relationship with his new neighbor, Emily, he realizes nothing is simple and learns that life is about more than just surviving… it’s about living.

My opinion

Vacant was a great love story, you can see the chemistry between Emily and Ethan grow during the book. Emily and Ethan were also very realistic persons and it was easy to like them. The only problem with this book was that it was way too short. I  would have liked to know more about them. Now it seemed like you just got an introduction of the story. And it wasn’t that the story hadn’t the potential to be a longer novel. But I really liked reading this book as it was and I definitely want to read more novels form this author.
Exerpt
As my arm swings with the rhythm of my feet, I brush Emily's fingers with my own. It’s an innocent accident, though the sudden warmth in my chest is anything but. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep up this ruse, playing her brotherly protector. While Emily has never spoken about boys in her class or voiced interests of the romantic sort, I know it’s inevitable. She has blossomed into a beautiful creature who has no idea of the devastation her beauty wreaks upon me and, surely, the boys around her. Her smile is infectious, and it’s only a matter of time before a suitor comes knocking at our door. I kind of feel sorry for the poor boy, as my first time meeting him will most likely be ugly. I’m a fierce guardian where Emily is concerned, not just because it’s my duty to protect her but because seeing Emily with another guy will end me.

I want to reach out and take her hand in mine as we walk, but I don’t. I have calculated the difference in our ages. Five years doesn’t seem all that much when she is twenty and I’m twenty-five. However, she is seventeen and still a minor, which is the only important difference, no matter how hard my libido begs to differ. I have to prepare for her to have romantic feelings for someone her own age, not a twenty-two year-old guy who has to act like her older brother.

Sisters rarely hold hands with their brothers.

Heart Like Mine - Amy Hatvany

    Short description

Heart Like MineWhen a young mother dies under mysterious circumstances, those she leaves behind begin looking for answers in the past—and find a long-buried secret they could have never imagined.

Thirty-six-year-old Grace McAllister never longed for children. But when she meets Victor Hansen, a handsome, charismatic divorced restaurateur who is father to Max and Ava, Grace decides that, for the right man, she could learn to be an excellent part-time stepmom. After all, the kids live with their mother, Kelli. How hard could it be?

At thirteen, Ava Hansen is mature beyond her years. Since her parents’ divorce, she has been the one taking care of her emotionally unstable mother and her little brother—she pays the bills, does the laundry, and never complains because she loves her mama more than anyone. And while her father’s new girlfriend is nice enough, Ava still holds out hope that her parents will get back together and that they’ll be a family again.

But only days after Victor and Grace get engaged, Kelli dies suddenly under mysterious circumstances—and soon, Grace and Ava discover there was much more to Kelli’s life than either ever knew.

Narrated by Grace and Ava in the present with flashbacks into Kelli’s troubled past, Heart Like Mine is a poignant and hopeful portrait about womanhood, love, and the challenges of family life.

    My opinion

Amy Hatvany did a great job writing this book. I especially liked how she used three different lead characters. Kelly the mom, Ava the daughter/teenager and Grace the stepmother. Each one of them got a life that they initially didn’t want, that they never expect that they would have. And it’s was interesting to see how the three of them dealt different with it.

There were also several flashbacks included in the book or even whole chapters that took place in the past. These parts of the book were what made this book so good for me. It was like you were on a journey through the book and through the heads of these three characters. And at the end all the loose ends came together and you finally knew there whole background. This was especially the case with Kelly, her life was more complex than you thought of the beginning of the book. And through these flashbacks you also got to see why Grace, Kelly and Ava are the persons they are today and why they make their decisions. And with the age difference between Ava and the two other women you can see exactly how your age influences your perspective on certain things.

I don’t read many romance/adult books, but I’m glad that I read this one because I really enjoyed reading it.

Waiting on Wednesday #6 - Dirty Little Secret

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It spotlights books that have not yet been released, but ones that you should pre-order today! This week's book that we are anxiously awaiting is:

    Dirty Little Secret

From the author of the “real page-turner” (Seventeen) Such a Rush comes an unforgettable new drama that follows friends-turned-lovers as they navigate the passions, heartbreaks, and intrigue of country music fame.

Bailey wasn’t always a wild child and the black sheep of her family. She used to play fiddle and tour the music circuit with her sister, Julie, who sang and played guitar. That ended when country music execs swooped in and signed Julie to a solo deal. Never mind that Julie and Bailey were a duet, or that Bailey was their songwriter. The music scouts wanted only Julie, and their parents were content to sit by and let her fulfill her dreams while Bailey’s were hushed away.

Bailey has tried to numb the pain and disappointment over what could have been. And as Julie’s debut album is set to hit the charts, her parents get fed up with Bailey’s antics and ship her off to granddad’s house in Nashville. Playing fiddle in washed-up tribute groups at the mall, Bailey meets Sam, a handsome and oh-so-persuasive guitarist with his own band. He knows Bailey’s fiddle playing is just the thing his band needs to break into the industry. But this life has broken Bailey’s heart once before. She isn’t sure she’s ready to let Sam take her there again…

Last summer I read Such a Rush by Jennifer Echols and I really liked her book. So I defenitely want to read more books from this author.

Cover Reveal - The Avery Shaw Experiment by Kelly Oram

    Title: The Avery Shaw Experiment
    Author: Kelly Oram
    Publisher: Bluefields
    Format: ebook
    Genre: YA contemporary romance
    Release Date: May 2013

    Summary:

When Avery Shaw’s heart is shattered by her life-long best friend, she chooses to deal with it the only way she knows how—scientifically.

The state science fair is coming up and Avery decides to use her broken heart as the topic of her experiment. She’s going to find the cure. By forcing herself to experience the seven stages of grief through a series of social tests, she believes she will be able to get over Aiden Kennedy and make herself ready to love again. But she can’t do this experiment alone, and her partner (ex partner!) is the one who broke her heart.

Avery finds the solution to her troubles in the form of Aiden’s older brother Grayson. The gorgeous womanizer is about to be kicked off the school basketball team for failing physics. He’s in need of a good tutor and some serious extra credit. But when Avery recruits the lovable Grayson to be her “objective outside observer,” she gets a whole lot more than she bargained for, because Grayson has a theory of his own: Avery doesn’t need to grieve. She needs to live. And if there’s one thing Grayson Kennedy is good at, it’s living life to the fullest.

    Teaser One - Avery

Grayson finally noticed Aiden and I on the couch. “What are you two dorks doing?”

“Learning about steroids,” I said cheerfully. “You should probably know that using them can cause acne, testicular atrophy, decreased sperm count, prostate enlargement and gynecomastia.”

    Grayson looked rightfully appalled. “Gyneco-what-ia?”

“Enlarged breasts in men,” Aiden translated. “So you should lay off the juice before you have to start borrowing Avery’s bras.”

I gasped at the mention of my underwear and whacked Aiden’s shoulder hard.

Behind me, Grayson laughed. I knew he was about to deliver a comeback, but I refused to look at him. Seconds later his breath was warm on my neck. He whispered just low enough that his mother couldn’t hear what he said. “I like my bras colorful and lacey, Aves. Not sure your collection would do it for me.”

Total mortification. Grayson may be as close as family to me, but he was still one of the hottest, most popular guys in our whole school. Him discussing my bras in that low sexy voice that could stop a girl’s heart on the spot made my lungs constrict. Plus, he was right of course. My bras were all of the plain white cotton variety.

    Teaser Two - Grayson

I started to leave the room but she stopped me at the door. “Grayson?” Her tone tugged at something inside me. “You really want to take me with you tonight?”

She sounded so small and unsure of herself. It was how she always sounded at school and around strangers, but never when she was at home with us. I think my brother had really broken her. I was seriously going to have to beat him sometime.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to. I know I really freaked out on you earlier, but I promise I’ll be fine. Aiden’s right.” She swallowed back a lump in her throat. “I’ll manage without him somehow.”

“Aiden’s a tool. You can learn how to manage tomorrow. Tonight’s New Years Eve and for once in your life you’re going to spend it without Aiden or The Discovery Channel.

I knew I was making progress when she cracked a smile and asked, “What about Whootylicious in 7 B?”

I thought of the luscious booty I’d originally planned on seeing tonight and sighed. “That will be an unfortunate loss, but, like you, I will just have to deal.”

I winked and then decided I’d give her ten minutes before I came back and physically dragged her out of bed.

Waiting on Wednesday #5 - The Distance Between Us

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It spotlights books that have not yet been released, but ones that you should pre-order today! This week's book that we are anxiously awaiting is:

    The Distance Between Us

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

The Lady of Secrets - Susan Caroll

    Short description

The Lady of SecretsMeg Wolfe, The Lady of Faire Isle, is a gifted healer who can find a cure for almost any ailment. But she's also the daughter of Cassandra Claire, a mad witch and heretic with a notorious history. Meg's infamous lineage makes her a target from both those who want to use her extraordinary talents for good and those who want to use them for evil. One man in particular needs her special skills: to execute his revenge on a king. History and a kingdom hang in the balance as Meg tries to navigate the delicate line between right and wrong. And what she discovers is that she can no longer trust anyone or anything...not even her own heart.

    My opinion

The Lady of Secrets was a perfect book for me, since I really love historical fiction and mixed with a bit of paranormal it’s just perfect! There were also other things that made this book great, like Meg and her friend Seraphine . They had both very different characters. Meg thought about things before doing them and she kept most of her feelings to herself, afraid of being hurt of to hurt someone. Where Seraphine did most of the time things before thinking about what the consequences could be. And although it looks like she’s indifferent to a lot she actually does care about the people she loves. But sometimes she’s just to pride or afraid to show it. And that’s why the friendship of this two women is so beautiful, no matter what they think or say they do care for each other and they will do everything to protect each other. And then you got Sir Patrick Graham and Armigil Blackwood, again those two have a very different personality but nonetheless they are very good friends for each other. So that’s the first aspect that made this book so great.
The second aspect was the plotline of the book. I really like books about the British monarchy and I hadn’t read one about king James I before so it was very interesting for me to read. I know that not all the fact that were mentioned in the book will be correct, after all this book is fiction. But still I recognized many things from my literature and history classes in school, like the gunpowder plot. I also loved how the historical part was subtle mixed with a supernatural aspect. Meg was a true witch, but it was also the time of the inquisition so I liked to see the different points of view on this aspect.
The only minor point for me was that the book was written in the third person, because I often find it to connect to the characters when it’s written in this perspective. But in this book I didn’t bother me much because I loved all the characters. And this way it took you on a journey to unravel some secrets and I have to admit that I never saw one of them coming.
So I really like this book and I would recommend it to everyone who loves reading historical fiction.
Note: this is the 6th book in a serie, but it isn’t necessary to read the previous ones to understand the story (I only read this one and I even didn’t know that it was the 6th book).

    Warm Bodies - Isaac Marion

    Short description
Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1)'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.

Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.

This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...

    My opinion

Warm Bodies was the first zombie book I’ve ever read. I don’t know why but I always was a bit resistant when it came to zombies. Vampires, werewolf’s, faeries seemed all ok to me, but when I imagined a zombie they were not nice to look at so that’s maybe why it took me so long to read a book about them. And I’m glad I read Warm Bodies, now I like zombies (at least R and his friends). I really liked how R grow from an unfeeling monster to somebody who cares about the people he loves. But I have to admit that I found some part of the books gross especially in the beginning where the author fully described how R was eating brains (but then again I have a weak stomach when it comes to such sort of things). Other than that I really liked the book the characters were well worked out and there wasn’t a dull moment in the book. I also find it intresting to see how the zombies were formed, I never expected it to be that way. Although I liked this book I don’t know if I will read another zombie book again, I still have this weird of them in my head. But when the sequel comes out I’m going to read it.

So I really liked this book and I can’t wait to see the movie.

    The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines, #4)

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Scent of Magic was a fine read but it missed something that the first book Touch of Power had. Maybe it was the lack of chemistry because Kerrick and Avry where not together for the most part off the book.  Do not worry we still get to see a lot off Kerrick, he has his own point of view. But still the two of them should have been together a lot more in this book! I hope they won’t leave each other’s side in the next book.

Other than that this book was everything I expected it to be.  It had a strong plot and there were some very unexpected turns in it. Some were sad, others were moments that made me smile a lot. And that was what made the book so good. As always the characters were fantastic. Avry was her strong, brave self, the monkeys were as hilarious as always and Kerrick was just as loveable as always. And I loved that we got to see more of prince Ryne, I grew fond of him during this book. The new characters that were introduced in this book were also great, they all got their own personality but at the same time they were all the same.

Another minor point off this book was the cliffhanger at the end. I really hate them, especially when you have to wait for a long time to read the next book. Why do authors torture us with it anyway? I mean we all want to read the next book anyway!

But all in all I really enjoyed reading this book and I can’t wait to read the next one.
