There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them. And she may be the only hope mankind has as the rapture approaches and evil rises.

Ember is an epic paranormal adventure about an eighteen year old girl who discovers that she's immune to fire and any other injury when she's in a horrific car crash that kill her parents. Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she finds out that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels. While Ember learns about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two young men who live in a frightening walled compound int the forest. Inexplicitly drawn to one of the men in particular, an impossible romance develops. But it is cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war - one that's been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years. When the compound's inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil - and the grayness in between. Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn't the only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends. She also might be one of the few champions who will make a stand for all of mankind as a rapture approaches and the end of days begin.

Embers is a dark and gritty YA novel that's the first book in the series, The Wings of War.

I am a fan of Karen Ann Hopkins ever since I’ve read her Temptation series. She has the ability to transport you to the world of the characters in a magical way. And whether you want to or not you feel a connection with the characters and you cannot help but like them.

Embers is an amazing paranormal action/romance book about a seventeen-year-old girl named Ember. When her parents died in a tragic car accident Embers world changed for good. Not only did her family apart, she also learned that she was immune to fire and that she healed way faster than she should have. When so goes to the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee to live with an old family relative she learns that everything she thought once to be true isn’t. Here she learns who she really is and what her destiny is. Nothing will ever be the same for her again.

Ember is a great character to follow. She’s unique, very strong and not easily frightened. She’s not afraid to stand up for herself and at times she’s a little to impulsive. But most important she’s real and relatable. She’s aware of her faults and weaknesses and she doesn’t try to cover them up. I loved watching Ember mature and grow through the book. The other main character, Swayer, was just as loveable as Ember. I really loved reading the parts that were written in his perspective. In nature he might be one of the bad guys, but in the end he has an amazing heart. He’s really protective over the ones he cares about and he would do about everything to keep them save.

Many books these days are about angels and to be honest I’m a bit tired of it. So I was a bit worried at first that I was just going to read the same old story only in a different setting. But I can say that I shouldn’t have worried at all. The story is so different than any angel book that I’ve read before. The whole world building and concept was really interesting and well described. Hopkins effortlessly wove the romance into the action and paranormal situation and made it one complete storyline. I couldn’t put the book down.

The book was fast paced and I kept turning page after page to figure out what was going to happen next. After I finished the book I was left me wanting more. I highly recommend this book to fans of paranormal fiction and the ones who love fantasy, action and adventure. So actually I recommend this book to everyone! I’m impatiently awaiting the next book’s release to see where things will pick again. In the mean time I will probably reread this book!

About the author

A native of New York State, Karen Ann Hopkins now lives with her family on a farm in northern Kentucky, where her neighbors in all directions are members of a strict Amish community. Her unique perspective became the inspiration for the story of star-crossed lovers Rose and Noah. When she's not homeschooling her kids, giving riding lessons or tending to a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats, she is dreaming up her next romantic novel.
