"Savannah wanted to kiss him, but she had never even kissed a human guy before, let alone a ghost. How was she supposed to kiss him if he wasn't really there?"

Savannah has never been in love before, but she's in love with Hunter Emmerton. He's cute, funny, charming... and a ghost. How can you date someone if nobody else can see them?

When seventeen-year-old Savannah Fraser and her three friends are killed in a car accident, they are given a second chance at life by a group of century-old earthbound spirits who need their help.

Savannah learns she is a Chosen One, which means she can switch between human and spirit form, heal people, and control the weather - and she is also now invincible.

The Chosen Ones are the only ones who can defeat The Forces - a trio of evil half-spirits who are slowly destroying the perfect little town of Fort Everwich with violent storms and not-so-natural disasters - and stop them from harming everyone they care about.

The Forces are set on destroying everything Savannah knows and loves, but they also have a more sinister plan - they want a new member to join them. They won't give up until they get the one they want - and they have Savannah firmly in their sights.

But what Savannah didn't count on was falling in love with Hunter. She's never loved anyone the way she loves Hunter, and she knows he loves her, too. But how can they be together forever if he no longer exists and she's the only one who can see him?

Will Savannah have enough belief in herself to defeat the Forces, or will they be able to lure her to the dark side and turn her against her loved ones - and tear her and Hunter apart?

When the author approached me with the question if I wanted to read Faded I didn’t hesitate a moment. The blurb of this book sounded really interesting and I couldn’t wait to find out more about the Chosen Ones and The Forces.

The beginning of the book was rather slow. The first few chapters were rather unnecessary, they were too introductory. It took quite a bit too really get into the story. But the story progressed from there on and it all culminated in a great ending. One of the things why it was hard to really get into the story was because the author constantly switched from point of view. Sometimes it took me a couple of lines until I realized that she had switched, so that was a little annoying.

The plot was rather a classic one, Good versus Evil. But to be honest I still feel like I need to see the real Evil. The Evil ones in this book are another set of ‘chosen ones’ who have gone rough. They want control of the population of the town. Yes the cause some heavy storms but they never really hurt anyone. So I don’t see how they can gain power when they don’t take any action. Maybe we are going to see more of this in the next two books, I certainly hope so.

There were a lot of characters and we all get to meet them in the beginning of the book. It could have been confusing, often it is when you get to meet a lot of characters in the first few pages. But not this time, the author described them well and it was clear who is who. The characters were likeable, I especially liked Hunter a lot. He was such a sweet guy and he always knows what to do to make someone feel better. And most importantly he never loses fate in someone. Savannah the other main character was likeable as well. She might not be my favorite character ever but I liked her well enough. I especially loved her love for her family and friends. She’s really loyal to them and she would do anything do them to protect them. One of the thing I loved the most about the characters was that they were all so different form one another. But at the same time they completed each other so well and that was so great to see.

Overall the book was good, while it might not be a page turner it did make me want to find out what was going to happen next.  I am excited to see what will happen in the next two books and I hope to learn more about the Chosen Ones and The Forces. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes YA paranormal books, especially Ghost stories.

Release Day Blitz + Review: The Donor by Nikki Rae + Giveaway

Casey Williams and her family are poor. Her parents work non-stop and so does she, just so they can keep the trailer roof from leaking.
They're getting by fine enough when the headaches start. Then there's the nosebleeds. And the inevitable doctor's bills.
Fortunately for Casey, there's MyTrueMatch.com: an exclusive, quick, and almost easy way to pay it all back before her parents even have to know.
All she has to do is give a man she's never met whatever he wants from her body.

Nikki is probably one of my favorite independent authors. Her Sunshine series was amazing so when I heard she was working on a new project I was ecstatic.

Even though The Donor is only a novel Nikki manages to pull me right into the story from the start. With her books it's impossible not to get sucked into it directly. She even manages to let me feel connected with the main character within the first few pages.

Jonah and Casey both have a difficult life. Casey her parents lost almost everything when her father had an accident. And every month they worry because this month might be the month that they lose the roof over their heads. Jonah lives in a nice house and has his own company. So why is his life difficult you can think. I encourage you to read this novella so you can find out.

So many things did happen in this novella without it being an overload. Jonah and Casey finally got to meet each other. There past was revealed bit by bit so that you had the time to come up with your own conclusions. In the first part we mostly learned things about Casey’s life so Jonah stayed a mystery till well into the novella. The better Casey gets to know Jonah the more she struggles with her feelings for him. She knows that anything besides friendship is impossible from them because of her condition, his way of life and because she knows that them being together will only be for a short period of time. But still she can’t help but be drawn to him even though Jonah has secrets of his own, secrets that can destroy everything he has with Casey.

From the start of this novella I had an ending of my own in my mind and I was pretty sure that that would be the ending. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was surprised with the ending Nikki chose. The ending of this novella was really heartbreaking. It the right ending for this book and I was satisfied with it. But I wouldn’t have minded if their story was longer.

One of the things I loved the most about this novella was that it was told in little jumps. The story always altered between the present and the future until the present and the future were the same. It was a lot of fun to read such a book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novella and all the other novellas. I would recommend it to anyone whose looking for a short paranormal read. Nikki has a real talent and I’m keeping an eye open for her next book!

Waiting on Wednesday #71: A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It spotlights books that have not yet been released, but ones that you should pre-order today! This week's book that I am anxiously awaiting is:

A Court of Thorns and Roses
by Sarah J. Maas

16096824

When 19-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin - one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an  ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it... or doom Tamlin - and his world - forever.

Why I can't wait
I love fairytale retellings, most of the time they are pretty great. And I know that Sarah J. Maas is a great author, I love her Throne of Glass series. I'm not a big fan of the cover, but oh well I'll deal with it.

There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them. And she may be the only hope mankind has as the rapture approaches and evil rises.

Ember is an epic paranormal adventure about an eighteen year old girl who discovers that she's immune to fire and any other injury when she's in a horrific car crash that kill her parents. Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she finds out that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels. While Ember learns about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two young men who live in a frightening walled compound int the forest. Inexplicitly drawn to one of the men in particular, an impossible romance develops. But it is cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war - one that's been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years. When the compound's inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil - and the grayness in between. Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn't the only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends. She also might be one of the few champions who will make a stand for all of mankind as a rapture approaches and the end of days begin.

Embers is a dark and gritty YA novel that's the first book in the series, The Wings of War.

I am a fan of Karen Ann Hopkins ever since I’ve read her Temptation series. She has the ability to transport you to the world of the characters in a magical way. And whether you want to or not you feel a connection with the characters and you cannot help but like them.

Embers is an amazing paranormal action/romance book about a seventeen-year-old girl named Ember. When her parents died in a tragic car accident Embers world changed for good. Not only did her family apart, she also learned that she was immune to fire and that she healed way faster than she should have. When so goes to the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee to live with an old family relative she learns that everything she thought once to be true isn’t. Here she learns who she really is and what her destiny is. Nothing will ever be the same for her again.

Ember is a great character to follow. She’s unique, very strong and not easily frightened. She’s not afraid to stand up for herself and at times she’s a little to impulsive. But most important she’s real and relatable. She’s aware of her faults and weaknesses and she doesn’t try to cover them up. I loved watching Ember mature and grow through the book. The other main character, Swayer, was just as loveable as Ember. I really loved reading the parts that were written in his perspective. In nature he might be one of the bad guys, but in the end he has an amazing heart. He’s really protective over the ones he cares about and he would do about everything to keep them save.

Many books these days are about angels and to be honest I’m a bit tired of it. So I was a bit worried at first that I was just going to read the same old story only in a different setting. But I can say that I shouldn’t have worried at all. The story is so different than any angel book that I’ve read before. The whole world building and concept was really interesting and well described. Hopkins effortlessly wove the romance into the action and paranormal situation and made it one complete storyline. I couldn’t put the book down.

The book was fast paced and I kept turning page after page to figure out what was going to happen next. After I finished the book I was left me wanting more. I highly recommend this book to fans of paranormal fiction and the ones who love fantasy, action and adventure. So actually I recommend this book to everyone! I’m impatiently awaiting the next book’s release to see where things will pick again. In the mean time I will probably reread this book!

Review: John Dreamer (John Dreamer #1) by Elise Celine

20739303Title: John Dreamer
Author: Elise Celine
Series: John Dreamer
Genre: fantasy, YA
Publisher: AuthorBuzz
Publication date: February 12th 2014
Pages: 203 (Kindle)
Source: Netgalley

Andy wasn't usually sure about much, but she was absolutely certain this was the weirdest day of her life as she stood stranded in the middle of a great white room with six strangers. Well, they were mostly strangers. She could have sworn she'd seen the guy with the green eyes before, and maybe that was why he kept staring at her.

When a man calling himself the Guardian appeared and said they had come to make their deepest dreams come true, they embark on an adventure none of them ever imagined, and the consequences of their actions would change them forever.

"John Dreamer" is the first in a series of books set in the confines of the Great White Room.

When I saw the cover of this book on Netgalley I was immediately attracted to it. The cover is just so stunning and I had to know what this book was about.

The concept of this book is really strong and unique, I had never read anything like it before. Seven teens find themselves in a white room with nothing else than seven chairs. One for each one of them.
In this ‘dream world’ they are sent on some strange adventures. Their goal is to learn new things about themselves that they never knew. This was one of the main things I liked about this book, it was about character development.

However there were a few things that bothered me while reading this book. The most important thing is that I didn’t connect with the main character, Andy, at all. In the end she still felt like a stranger to me, which is weird since we got to follow the story through her eyes. Also just when we got to know most of the characters, two of them already dropped out that was really a shame.

The romance between the characters also out of the blue. Andy fell in love with John as soon as she laid her eyes on him. It took her no more than eight seconds, her own words. John seemed to feel the same way about her and I couldn’t understand why. Near the end it was made clear why John felt like this towards Andy so I was okay with that.

I still don’t know completely what to think of this book. Overall I liked it but some things were lacking. But I'll still be looking out for the sequels.

It is not a peaceful time in the Algardis Empire. War is raging between the mages and seventeen-year-old Sara Fairchild will be right in the middle of it.

She just doesn't know it yet.

Sara is the daughter of a disgraced imperial commander, executed for desertion. Sara is also the best duelist and hand-to-hand combatant in Sandrin. She lives quietly with her family's shame but when challenged about her family's honer, her opponent inevitably loses.

On the night she finds out her father's true last actions, she takes the Mercenary Guilds' vows to serve in the emperor's army. Using her quick wits and fierce fighting skill, she earns a spot in the first division.

There she discovers secrets the mages on both sides would prefer stay hidden. Dark enemies hunt her and soon it's not just Sara questioning the motivation behind this war.

While fighting mages, blackmailing merchants and discovering new friends, Sara comes across something she's never had before - passion. The question is - can she fight for her empress against a mage who might unwittingly claim her heart?

This is year one of the Initiate Wars. Sara is hoping it doesn't become the year she dies.

Terah Edun is probably one of the most underestimated YA writers. She has the ability to create whole new fantasy worlds that are very compelling.

Sara Fairchild is a young fighter of the Algardis Empire. She has a reputation to uphold, after all her father was one of the best fighters of his time, both as a gladiator in the arena as on the battle field, that is until he was killed for his desertion. To find out the truth about her father’s death she walks on paths she swore she would never walk. After all what does she has to lose?

I love Sara, I found her more likeable than Ciardis in her Courtlight series that takes place in the same world. That’s one of the first reasons why I liked this book better. She’s well developed but she still has a lot of place to grow. While she might come across as cold you can feel that she’s a loving person who would give her life for her friends and family. Her partner in crime is just as loveable. The contrast between the two of them can’t be bigger, she’s the fighter and he’s the nerd, but they complete each other so well. And more than once they have let me laugh because of their bantering.
One of the other things I loved so much about this series was that it was full with action, without it being overkill. Sara and her companions ventured from the one adventure into the next. Throughout the entire book I was sitting on the edge of the book. And I can’t wait to find out in what kind of trouble they will get into next.

Edun’s writing style is very fluid and clear. It allows you to engross yourself completely in the story. She creates an extraordinary world that is full of magic. At the same time it was kind of funny that she also used elements from this world, she could have decided to create a new language but instead she used German. It’s quite interesting for me since it’s one of the languages I speak.

Overall, this was a light and fast paced read that I immensely enjoyed. It is a must read for all fantasy lovers. I can't wait to read the second book in this series!

Review: Iban Dream by Golda Mowe

16368526Title: Iban Dream
Author: Golda Mowe
Genre: fantasy, YA, Adult
Publisher: Monsoon Books
Publication date: May 1st 2012
Pages: 256 (ebook)
Source: received from author

Orphaned as a young boy in the rainforests of Borneo, Bujang is brought up by a family of orangutans, but his adult future has already been decided for him by Sengalang Burong, the Iban warpath god. On reaching adulthood, Bujang must leave his ape family to serve the warpath god as a warrior and a headhunter.
Having survived his first assignment - to kill an ill-tempered demon in the form of a ferocious wild boar - subsequent adventures see Bujang converse wit gods, shamans, animal spirits and with the nomadic people of Borneo as he battles evil spirits and demons to preserve the safety of those he holds dear to him.

But Bujang's greatest test is still to come and he must rally a large headhunting expedition to free his captured wife and those of his fellow villagers. In this unique work of fantasy fiction, author Golda Mowe - herself and Iban from Borneo - uses her real beliefs, taboos and terminology of the Iban (a longhouse-dwelling indigenous group of people from Borneo who, until very recently, were renowned for practicing headhunting) to weave an epic tale of good versus evil.

One of the things I love the most about being a book blogger is that I get send books from all over the world. It is very interesting to learn about new cultures. This is also the case with Iban Dream. Golda Mowe shares her knowledge of the beliefs and taboos of the Iban people, Borneo’s indigenous people. This book should appeal to fiction and fantasy readers.

The book follows the life of Bujang, from him being a boy to a full grown man with a family of his own. Bujang was only a boy when he was sent away from his family because his community thought him to be evil. Many years he survived in the jungle thanks to his ape family, I couldn’t help but think about Tarzan when reading this part. When the time is ripe he again joins the human world where he must find a home of his own. Through his eyes the author shares the cultural beliefs of the Iban people. I learned so much by reading this book and I can’t thank the author enough for it.

The book was really interesting and I loved that I learned a lot about his new culture. But I couldn’t help that my mind visited different places while reading this book. I can’t say anything bad about the writing style because technically there was nothing wrong with it, but it was just not the right one for me.

Overall an enjoyable book with a lot of interesting facts. I would recommend to everyone who wants to learn something from a different culture.

Author Inteview: Chloe Miles

Today I am having an interview with Chloe Miles, the author of The Faded Trilogy. Now what makes her so special I can hear you think. Well believe it or not. Chloe first published her story on Wattpad before she found a publisher. And earlier this year the third book in the series was released!

Chloe Miles is a twenty-something author, dreamer, shameless chocoholic, and hopeless romantic.
When she's not writing or daydreaming, she loves escaping reality with her favorite playlists, eating too much chocolate, and curling up on her couch in her PJs with a good TV show and a cup of tea.
The Faded Trilogy is her first series.
Goodreads  | Twitter

Q: What inspired you to write The Faded Trilogy?
A: I wanted to write a paranormal romance that was a little different to everything else that's been already been written. I loved the idea of earthbound spirits protecting the town from evil. And, being a hopeless romantic, I loved the idea of eternal undying love, especially between two characters who are so young but whose love is so rare and beyond their years.
It happened to be storming when I was coming up with the idea for the series, so that's the inspiration behind the power over the weather that the characters possess and the unpredictable storms terrorizing the town.

Q: What are your plans for the future now that The Faded Trilogy is finished?
A: I want to dedicate my heart and soul to The Faded Trilogy and ensure its success before I move on to any other writing projects. You never know what may happen in the future in regards to other writing projects, but right now my heart belongs to Savannah and Hunter.

Q: How would you describe The Faded Trilogy in three words?
A: Inspiring, goosebump-inducing, romantic.

Q: Could you tell us three random facts about yourself?
A: 1) I eat way too much chocolate
     2) I was a bit of a nerd at school and came fourth in the district spelling bee
     3) I am completely and utterly hopeless at every form of sport that possibly exists

Q: Who inspired you to become a writer?
A: Ever since I was a kid, I've always had a vivid imagination and loved creating stories in my head. I'd always wanted to be an author or a scriptwriter, but life seemed to get in the way of those professional aspirations for a while. Then I discovered the world of indie publishing, came up with an idea for a trilogy, and here I am.

Q: You first posted Faded on Wattpad. Do you think platforms such as Wattpad might be useful for authors who want to publish their books in the end?
A: Posting Faded on Wattpad was a wonderful way to get feedback from readers and see how they were connecting wit the storyline and the characters. It didn't necessarily impact on sales, but it gave me a huge push forward in knowing that I was doing something right with my writing.

Q: Which was your favorite book to write? And why?
A: My favorite book to write was Ever After. I don't want to give away the ending, but the ending was something that I knew I wanted right from the very beginning when I first got the idea of the series, so it felt like a really wonderful accomplishment when I finally wrote the ending and saw everything fall into place for the characters. It's something I'm really proud of and something that I think the readers will be happy with.

Q: Are any of the characters inspired on people you know or are they all creation of your mind?
A: Savannah is very much like my teenage self. She is a little shy and reserved and more at home with her nose buried in her textbooks than confronting a room full of her peers... let alone coming fact to face with The Forces and having to protect her entire town! (Thankfully, I never had to contend with the latter.)

Q: Who was you actor/musician crush when you were a teenager?
A: I didn't really have a celebrity crush when I was a teenager, but I have to admit that when I was seven I wanted to marry Zac Hanson.

Q: Anything you want to say to your readers?
A: Love is an emotional feeling. The idea of Savannah and Hunter's love for each other is that the strongest feelings we feel aren't always physically felt but felt wholly and powerfully withing your heart. I believe there is a powerful and inspirational message behind The Faded Trilogy, and I hope that the readers will walk away from this series with a little more hope and love in their hearts.

From the USA Today bestselling author of True, Sweet, and Believe comes a tantalizing New Adult novel about finding love in the most unexpected ways...

Kylie Warner prides herself on being optimistic, but after finding her best friend in bed with her boyfriend and flunking chemistry, her upbeat attitude has taken a dive. Even an impromptu hook-up with her sexy new chemistry tutor only brightens her mood slightly. After all, it's not like she'll ever see the tattooed scholar again...

While he's a whiz at complex equations, Jonathon Kadisch has trouble when it comes to figuring out women. So when Kylie tells him that she's pregnant after their night of passion, he's at a complete loss. He's prepared to be a good father - unlike his own deadbeat dad - but he's less prepared to fall for the genuine and alluring blond bearing his child.

With emotions running high, Kylie wonders if Jonathon's devotion is out of growing love or looming obligation. And when heartbreak threatens to tear them apart, Jonathon will have to fight for the only girl who's ever mad him feel whole...

While Shatter is the fourth book in this series it is the first book I’ve actually read. It was doable, I mean you didn’t get lost in the story because you hadn’t read the other ones yet. But I would still recommend that you read the previous books first since this one contains minor spoilers from the previous books.

Kylie is a mess when we meet her in this book. She’s still recovering from the shock that her boyfriend slept with one of her best friends. She moved out of their mutual apartment, and lets be honest Kylie is not a person to live alone. She enjoys company way too much. To top it all of her chemistry grades are slipping. Luckily for her she finds herself a tutor who can work miracles. And a miracle is all she needs at the moment. Expecting a chemistry nerd she’s surprised when she meets Jonathon. He’s everything but a nerd and when she’s with him she feels alive again for the first time in months. There one night together leads to something more, something they both never had expected. Together they must find a way to get over this obstacle or it might destroy them both.

I’ve always believed that when you both have completely different characters you will only complement each other better and that it does make your relationship more interesting and colorful. Jonathon and Kylie proved that to me. Kylie and Jonathon were completely different people. She was the optimist, nothing could bring her down. While Jonathon was the realist, after all everything can be explained by science. But what can you say opposites attract. It was one of the things I enjoyed the most about this book. They were both learning from each other, they didn’t think that there vision on the world was better or worse. Kylie’s lack of confidence in herself annoyed me a little, I mean I get it she got cheated on by her ex-boyfriend. But she was such a bubbly and fun character. So she shouldn’t have worried so much that she wasn’t good enough for Jonathon. Jonathon was a great guy, he’s almost everything I would look for in a guy. He’s incredibly sweet, a little dorky, funny and cute. He had his own garbage from the past but it didn’t hold him back.

Throw in Kylie’s best friends and Jonathon’s flat mate and you have a whole bunch of merry people. They made sure that there were enough humorous moments in this book. They were exactly what I needed after a tough scene between Jonathon and Kylie.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read with a lot of touching scenes. I’m definitely going to read the other three books in this series.
